Step 2: Narrow your focus from a high-level goal to a specific behaviour that you want to change

Before using the tool you need to establish a specific behaviour you want to change.

We’ve outlined an example below of how to move from a high-level goal to a specific behaviour. Read the example and then fill in the boxes below.

You may have multiple behaviours that you want to change to achieve your goal. Start by focusing on one specific behaviour. This tool will help you to select behavioural principles that can be applied to one specific behaviour.

At the end, you will receive a summary report that outlines the principles you’ve identified. You can then use this tool again and repeat this activity to identify more principles for additional behaviours you want to change.

Example

What is the problem you want to solve? Resistance to antibiotics is increasing due to high levels of prescribing from GPs.

What is your high-level goal? To reduce antimicrobial resistance.

What is the specific behaviour you want to change? GP’s do not prescribe an antibiotic unnecessarily.

Your Turn

What is the problem you want to solve?

What is your high-level goal?

What is the specific behaviour you want to change?

If you have multiple behaviours you want to change, start with one and repeat this activity for each behaviour. You will have a chance to repeat this activity at the end of the exercise.
